Arles: Elise Peroi, guest artist in residence

Elise Peroi is the first artist to be invited to take part in the production residency at Arles, which aims to highlight regional know-how. She is developing a textile project entitled “Nouer une cabane” [Tying a hut], inspired by the herdsmen’s houses in the Camargue. Conceived as nomadic architecture, this production is an extension of her practice, which for several years has been combining ancestral weaving techniques with notions of space, landscape and habitat. The gardian’s house is inspiring because of its rudimentary nature and the possibility of using materials from the surrounding area (sagne, graminet, cut flowers, etc.).

I like to imagine spaces where landscape and habitat become one, seeking to invert what is in the service of: the role of the subject and the support, the body and the décor, in order to find points of balance”  – Elise Peroi

Eugénie Lefebvre
, co-founder of Les Ateliers de la Madeleine, Arles, and President of Printemps de Septembre, is guest curator for this residency.

A graduate of the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Elise Peroi (1990, Nantes) has immersed herself in the techniques of weaving, tapestry and the textile arts, for which the notion of gesture and ‘doing’ is as important as the result. Winner of the Prix de la Fondation Charles Oulmont in 2018, resident at the Academia Belgica in Rome in 2021, her work has been shown in international group and solo exhibitions, including Eleven Steens, Brussels; Fondation Boghossian, Brussels; CACC Clamart, Fondation Bailly, Lugano; Galerie Maria Lund, Paris, Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Rome.
