From Strata of Memory to Layers of Rock by Rain WU & Ralf PFLUGFELDER (RARA)

OPENING ON THURSDAY 6 SEPTEMBER FROM 17:00 > 21:00

RARA (Rain Wu and Ralf Pflugfelder, London/Maastricht/Berlin) has been invited by Thalie Art Foundation as part of its Art & Ecology program to imagine new ethical landscapes and narratives for humankind’s relationship with nature.

Faced with an ever-increasing instrumentalisation and destruction of nature, RARA wants to affect the collective imaginary to counter a widespread alienation from nature. At Fondation Thalie, Wu and Pflugfelder have researched the psychic and emotional claims that human beings and their societies have made on nature and vice versa. Investing 21st Century environmental imperatives with a sacred, mythic quality, they set out the unearthing of those memories, which may help to redress the balance.

Their immersive installation From Strata of Memory to Layers of Rock offers a deambulation through follies and riddles, a manifold of objects and installations intertwining man-made and natural materials. This ever-changing testbed is housed in a specifically conceived landscape activated through new rituals and unveilings, transforming the spaces of Fondation Thalie.

Rain Wu (TW) and Ralf Pflugfelder (DE) form the duo RARA.

Rain Wu (1987, Taiwan) is an artist and architect living and working in Maastricht and London. Her work is conceptually driven with interests in interactive experiences, spatial narratives and experimental materials. She graduated from the Royal College of Art and University College London. Her work has been exhibited in Sharjah Biennial, Taipei Biennial, The Palestinian Museum, London Design Biennale, Lisbon Architecture Triennale; she is one of the Designers in Residence at the Design Museum, London and is currently an associate lecturer at Chelsea College of Art, London and an artist in residence at the Jan van Eyck Acade- mie, Maastricht.

Ralf Pflugfelder (1979, Germany) is an artist living and working in Berlin and London. Through appropriation and associative thought processes that connect the everyday and the mythical, his artworks materialise in many di erent forms and scales: from sculpture to writing, painting to architecture, installation, performance, plagiarism, collaboration and commissioning. P ugfelder’s work involves a questioning of knowledge and language, history and truth — a reinvention of the modes of appea- rance and the creation of a work of art. His work has been shown at Manifesta, FLACC, Wysing Arts Centre, Performa Biennial, Kunsthaus Graz, Gwangju Biennale, Le 104 Centquatre Paris, Arnol ni Bristol, Lyon Biennial, Chisenhale Gallery, The Royal College of Art London, et al.

The exhibition, an installation to be activated, is a new production conceived during their residency at Fondation Thalie (April/September 2018).
