Untitled IIV: Gully in the Mountains
Jacqueline Surdell, 2019
Jacqueline Surdell was born in Chicago, now the third largest city in the United States, with its history marked by industry. This combination gave rise to an early artistic vision in which industry and craft converge in her practice. From childhood through university, Surdell was a high-level athlete. She approaches rope (her medium) in the studio with a discipline forged in the demanding world of competitive sport. The making of her wall sculptures requires total physical engagement: she uses her body as a weaving shuttle, her hand as a brushstroke. She threads herself between the warp threads, wielding industrial rope on wall-sized looms she has built herself. Surdell received her MFA with a specialisation in fiber and material studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2017. She is represented by Spazio Nobile gallery in Brussels.
