Untitled

Solange Pessoa, 2017

Untitled (2017) by Solange Pessoa depicts a tree that is simplified, compact, almost geometric on canvas: a mental image of the elements of life, of nature's movement — a vital, interior tree. This painting made using pigments drawn from the Belo Horizonte environment in which the artist works — achiote, linseed — also serves as a manifesto linked to the earth. Matter here is not merely medium: it is memory, territory, and cosmology.

Solange Pessoa

Brazilian artist born in 1961 and based in Belo Horizonte, Solange Pessoa has developed a body of work deeply rooted in raw matter — earth, bone, resin, wax — to evoke the primal forces of life and death. Her sculptures and installations summon an archaic cosmology drawn from Brazilian nature and ancestral rites. She is widely recognised as one of the essential figures of the contemporary Brazilian art scene.
