Noémie Sauve & Benjamin Van Wyk de Vries
Living with volcanoes
The podcast series Creators facing Climate Emergency provides a platform of conversations between artists, thinkers and scientists to create new narratives, to raise awareness and to incite action in the face of the climate change with artists as mediators.
The artist Noémie Sauve and the volcanologist Benjamin van Wyk de Vries are invited to share their research on the volcanic environment that they both encountered during a joint residency as part of The Possible Island project on the island of Vulcano, in northern Sicily.
Between fertility and toxicity, what is the influence of the geological environment on contemporary artistic practices? How are artists inspired by this unique refuge?
Speakers
Noémie Sauve (1980, Romans (26)) lives and works in Paris. A self-taught artist, draughtswoman and sculptor, she sets out to draw up a plastic iconography of fantasies, both contemporary and from the past, around domestication (of the elements, animals and landscapes), through the exploration of both forms and materials. She regularly collaborates with a wide range of specialists (biological engineers, vulcanologists, taxonomists, etc.) and strives to highlight the complexity of living organisms and their actions as a principle of fundamental autonomy. Selected by the jury for the Tara Pacific artist residency, she left on board the scientific schooner in 2017 - Fondation Tara Océan & Agnès b. She is regularly invited to take part in projects combining art and science, such as on the island of Vulcano (Sicily) for The Possible Island in 2021. Her artistic practice also irrigates many related fields in which she is fully involved, such as the creation of the Fonds d'Art Contemporain Agricole de l'association Clinamen (FACAC).
