By integrating a private space, the works of the Textile Languages exhibition blend with the house’s modernist style. They seem to embody the ideas of German-born American artist Anni Albers (1899-1994), a teacher at the Bauhaus and one of the textile design pioneer figures: If architecture is rigid and permanent by nature, textile is its very opposite. The exhibition presents works by some fifteen artists from very diverse cultural backgrounds and generations, with a special interest in the Indian emerging scene. Art forms focused on intimacy, memory, repetition and collective experience merge with practices expressing more a politically versed critical vision of the world, encapsulated by the choice of textile as a creative medium. If a derivation from the revival of the neo-crafts trend – which incidentally questions the very notion of craftsman-ship – is to be considered, it is mainly the expressive potential of the medium, its ability to create a language and convey a message that is here put to the fore, beyond mere aesthetic criteria.
